Gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) is a plastic surgery procedure that removes enlarged glandular tissue and excess fat from the male chest, restoring a flat, masculine contour. Gynecomastia itself is common — it can persist after puberty or develop with hormonal changes, weight gain or certain medications — and here's the part that matters: when the enlargement is glandular tissue rather than fat, no amount of diet or training will remove it. Surgery does, permanently.

Gynecomastia surgery prices in Budapest

Gynecomastia surgery at Plastic Surgery Centre Budapest starts from 1,900,000 HUF (~£4,510 / €5,220) — as a complete, all-inclusive package.

For comparison: typical UK private clinic prices run £4,000–6,500 for the surgery alone, with consultation, aftercare and extras often billed separately — and in Germany, anaesthesia and overnight stays are usually invoiced on top. The Budapest package includes everything:

  • consultation and the complete surgical fee, anaesthesia and anaesthesiologist
  • pre-operative tests: laboratory work, ECG and the anaesthesiology consultation
  • one night in the private hospital with full medical supervision
  • medication during your stay and the compression garment
  • follow-up examinations up to the 6th week
  • a dedicated English-speaking coordinator throughout

The exact price depends on whether glandular removal, liposuction or both are needed — your personal quote is fixed in writing after your consultation. The first consultation is free and carries no obligation.

What results can you expect?

A well-planned gynecomastia surgery delivers a flat, firm, masculine chest — with scars usually hidden at the edge of the areola, and a result that is permanent once your weight is stable.

What the procedure changes:

  • A flat chest contour — the glandular tissue that training couldn't touch is removed
  • Barely visible scars — typically a short incision at the lower edge of the areola, plus tiny liposuction entry points
  • A permanent result — removed glandular tissue does not grow back
  • Confidence back — at the pool, at the gym, in a fitted shirt

And the honest part: not every enlarged male chest is true gynecomastia. When the fullness is mostly fat (pseudogynecomastia), liposuction alone — or in some cases weight loss — may be the right answer. Your surgeon examines you and tells you openly which case yours is; that's a medical assessment, not something to guess from a website.

How the surgery works — step by step

  1. Consultation Your surgeon examines your chest, determines whether the enlargement is glandular, fatty or both, and plans the technique accordingly. Living abroad? The first consultation happens remotely with photos — you receive a fixed quote before you travel.
  2. Pre-operative tests Laboratory work, ECG and the anaesthesiology consultation — all completed at the clinic, in one visit.
  3. The surgery — 60–90 minutes Under general anaesthesia, the glandular tissue is removed through a short incision at the edge of the areola, and excess fat is removed with liposuction where needed.
  4. One night in the private hospital You recover overnight under full medical and nursing supervision, in a private room with en-suite bathroom.
  5. Recovery and follow-up A compression vest shapes the result for 4–6 weeks. Follow-up examinations are included up to the 6th week — and your coordinator remains one call away.

Where you'll recover

Your overnight stay is spent in a private hospital on the Danube bank — not on a ward. A private room with an en-suite bathroom, continuous nursing care, meals from an à la carte menu, and a window with one of the best views in Budapest.

Coming from abroad?

One trip of about 6–7 days covers everything: your in-person consultation and pre-op tests, the surgery 1–2 days later, one night in hospital, and your first check-up before you fly home. After that, follow-up continues remotely — your surgeon and English-speaking advisor stay directly reachable.

Prices, safety, and the full process for international patients are covered in detail on our Why Budapest page.

Recovery after gynecomastia surgery

Recovery is quick compared with most plastic surgery: most patients return to office work within about a week.

The compression vest is worn for 4–6 weeks to keep the new contour smooth as swelling settles. Light walking is encouraged from the first days; gym training and chest-loading exercise return gradually, with your surgeon's clearance, typically after 4–6 weeks. The final contour develops over 2–3 months as residual swelling resolves.

Risks and safety

Gynecomastia surgery is a routine, well-established procedure — serious complications are rare, but no surgery is risk-free.

Temporary swelling, bruising and tightness are a normal part of healing. Rarer risks include contour irregularities, asymmetry, changes in nipple sensation and — as with any surgery — infection or bleeding. Two things reduce these risks meaningfully: an experienced surgeon and a proper surgical environment — which is why every surgery here is performed by a senior surgeon in a fully equipped private hospital, with an overnight stay under medical supervision. Your surgeon walks you through the risks openly at your consultation, before you decide anything.

Frequently asked questions

Why hasn't the gym fixed my chest?

Because glandular tissue doesn't respond to exercise — training builds the muscle underneath it, which can even make the chest look fuller. If the enlargement is glandular, surgery is the only way to remove it. Whether yours is gland or fat is exactly what the consultation determines.

Will the gynecomastia come back after surgery?

The removed glandular tissue does not grow back, so for most patients the result is permanent. Significant weight gain, certain medications or hormonal problems can cause new fullness — if a hormonal cause is suspected, your surgeon will tell you at the consultation.

Will people see the scars?

The main incision runs along the lower edge of the areola, where the colour transition hides it, and liposuction entry points are a few millimetres each. After fading, the scars are hard to spot even with your shirt off.

When can I train again?

Light walking from the first days, office work after about a week, and gym training gradually from 4–6 weeks with your surgeon's clearance. The compression vest is worn for 4–6 weeks.

Is liposuction alone enough for me?

If the fullness is mostly fat, possibly yes — see our liposuction page. If there's firm glandular tissue behind the nipple, liposuction alone won't flatten the chest. Your surgeon examines you and gives you an honest answer at the free consultation.
